Attribution & Credits
Standing on the shoulders of open data and open source.

Vehicle images — Wikimedia Commons
The majority of vehicle photographs on Watt2Buy are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia article pages, under CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-SA 4.0 licences. For performance — particularly for users on Indian mobile networks — we mirror each photograph onto our own CDN and apply two automated transformations:
- Resize to a maximum width of 1200 px (no upscaling).
- Re-encode to WebP at quality 85 (typical 80–95% byte reduction over the source JPEG/PNG, no perceptible loss).
The mirrored files are served from our R2 object storage. No editorial changes are made — no cropping, no colour grading, no text overlay. The transformations are purely for delivery efficiency. Per CC BY-SA 4.0 share-alike, our mirrored copies remain under the same licence as the source; downstream re-use is permitted with attribution.
For every image we serve we retain the source URL, photographer attribution string, and licence in our database (the image_attribution, source_url and image_license columns of the vehicles table). We attribute the photographers collectively to the Wikimedia Commons community on this page rather than per-image; if you are the author of a specific photograph and would like a per-image credit, removal, or replacement with a different image, please write to corrections@watt2buy.org or use the “Report image” link on any vehicle card. We action take-down and credit corrections within 48 hours.
Vehicles for which we have not yet sourced a properly-licensed photograph render a generic brand-initial placeholder silhouette in place of the photo.
Vehicle images — BikeDekho (some 2W rows)
A small subset of two-wheeler photographs — primarily newer Indian EV brands (Ola Electric, Ather Energy, Hero Vida, Ultraviolette, Revolt, Matter, Simple Energy, etc.) for which Wikimedia coverage is not available — are sourced from the public Open Graph image of each model’s BikeDekho product page (cdn.bikedekho.com). These photos are not released under an explicit open licence. We use them under the standard editorial / nominative fair-use convention observed across the Indian auto-aggregator ecosystem (CarDekho, CarWale, BikeWale, Autocar India, etc.), where vehicle photographs are routinely embedded for buyer-comparison and review purposes.
As with Wikimedia images, the BikeDekho photographs are resized and WebP-encoded for delivery efficiency; no editorial alteration is made. The original BikeDekho product-page URL is recorded alongside each row.
If you are BikeDekho, an OEM, or the original photographer and would like any of these images removed or replaced, please contact corrections@watt2buy.org and we will action the request within 48 hours.
